Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these medications must be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle management.
