An Kindness of Strangers: The Way a Person I Barely Knew Helped Me Obtain the Role That Altered My Path

During the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a friend. Since my companion was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had planned a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a big ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side called International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we got some food, took a seat, and started talking to fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been working on studies with electron microscopy.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at the university – right next door to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I ought to seek a role with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that night. The engineering student came up to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but right away told my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she responded: “We can make that happen. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his full name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in so many ways. I lacked the courage or self-assurance to reach out at an prestigious college and request employment. Additionally, I had always wanted to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.

What's more, that role at the university led me to a position in Switzerland where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I now have a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
