A minimum of thirteen people lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in public works. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
